A Word for Health Challenges

May 09, 2021 | John Stevenson

Passage: Psalms 121:1-8

I wanted to address health challenges because so many people in our church face them. These challenges include illnesses—ordinary, rare, or pandemic—but also things like joint replacements, root canals, mental health issues, caregiving, and impacts on family and friends. Psalm 121 is a song about God helping his people. I’ll relate the Psalm to health challenges, but if you need God’s comfort about something else, this Biblical song has a message for you too.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 8

CONFESSION

Book of common prayer (2019)

Almighty and most merciful Father,

we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.

We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.

We have offended against your holy laws.

We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,

and we have done those things which we ought not to have done;

and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.

O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Spare all those who confess their faults.

Restore all those who are penitent,

according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,

that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,

to the glory of your holy Name.

Amen.

APOSTLE’S CREED

Leader: Confess with me our faith through the Apostle’s Creed

Congregation:

I believe in God the Father Almighty

Maker of heaven and earth

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit

Born of the virgin Mary

Suffered under Pontius Pilate

Was crucified, died, and was buried

He descended to the dead

On the third day he rose again

He ascended into heaven

And is seated at the right hand of the Father

I believe in the Holy Spirit

The holy catholic church

The communion of saints

The forgiveness of sins

The resurrection of the body

And the life everlasting

Amen.

Jesus Is Better

Verse 1

There is no other so sure and steady

My hope is held in Your hand

When castles crumble and breath is fleeting

Upon this rock I will stand

upon this rock I will stand

Chorus

Glory Glory we have no other King

But Jesus Lord of All

We raise the anthem, our loudest praises ring

We crown Him Lord of All

Verse 2

Your kindly rule has shattered and broken

The curse of sin's tyranny

My life is hidden 'neath Heaven's shadow

Your crimson flood covers me

Your crimson flood covers me

Bridge

In all my sorrows Jesus is better make my heart believe

In every victory Jesus is better make my heart believe

Than any comfort Jesus is better make my heart believe

More than all riches Jesus is better make my heart believe

Our souls declaring Jesus is better make my heart believe

And our song eternal Jesus is better make my heart believe

SERMON

Satisfied In You (Psalm 42)

By The Sing Team

Verse 1

I have lost my appetite; and a flood is welling up behind my eyes

So I eat the tears I cry

And if that were not enough they know

Just the words to cut and tear and prod

When they ask me “Whereʼs your God?”

PRE-CHORUS:

Why are you downcast, oh my soul?

Why so disturbed within me?

I can remember when you showed your grace to me

CHORUS:

As a deer pants for water, so my soul thirsts for you,

And when I survey Your splendor, You so faithfully renew

Like a bed of rest for my fainting flesh, I am satisfied in you

VERSE 2:

When Iʼm staring at the ground;

Itʼs an inbred feedback loop that brings me down

So itʼs time to lift my brow and remember better days;

When I loved to worship you and all your ways

Singing sweetest songs of praise

BRIDGE:

Let my sighs give way to songs that sing about your faithfulness

Let my pain reveal your glory as my only real rest

Let my losses show me all I truly have is you

‘Cause all I truly have is You

VERSE 3:

So when Iʼm drowning out at sea

And your breakers and your waves crash down on me

Iʼll recall your safety scheme

Youʼre the one who made the waves

And your Son went out to suffer in my place

And to tell me that I’m safe

PRE-CHORUS:

Why are you downcast, oh my soul?

Why so disturbed within me?

I can remember when you showed your grace to me

CHORUS:

As a deer pants for water, so my soul thirsts for you,

And when I survey Your splendor, You so faithfully renew

Like a bed of rest for my fainting flesh, I am satis - fied in you

OUTRO:

Why am I down? Why so disturbed? I am satisfied in you

I am satisfied in you I am satisfied in you I am satisfied in you

COMMUNION

Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me

By CityAlight

VERSE 1

What gift of grace is Jesus my redeemer

There is no more for heaven now to give

He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom

My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace

To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus

For my life is wholly bound to his

Oh how strange and divine, I can sing: all is mine!

Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Verse2

The night is dark but I am not forsaken

For by my side, the Saviour He will stay

I labour on in weakness and rejoicing

For in my need, His power is displayed

To this I hold, my Shepherd will defend me

Through the deepest valley He will lead

Oh the night has been won, and I shall overcome!

Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Verse 3

No fate I dread, I know I am forgiven

The future sure, the price it has been paid

For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon

And He was raised to overthrow the grave

To this I hold, my sin has been defeated

Jesus now and ever is my plea

Oh the chains are released, I can sing: I am free!

Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Verse 4

With every breath I long to follow Jesus

For He has said that He will bring me home

And day by day I know He will renew me

Until I stand with joy before the throne

To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus

All the glory evermore to Him

When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat:

Yet not I, but through Christ in me

When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat:

Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Yet not I, but through Christ in me

Yet not I, but through Christ in me!

Yet not I, but through Christ in me!

Rejoice

By Dustin Kensrue

Verse 1

Come and stand before your Maker Full of wonder, full of fear

Come behold His power and glory Yet with confidence draw near

For the one who holds the heavens And commands the stars above

Is the God who bends to bless us With an unrelenting love

CHORUS 1

Rejoice, come and lift your hands and raise your voice

He is worthy of our praise Rejoice, sing the mercies of your King

And with trembling, rejoice

VERSE 2

We are children of the promise the beloved of the Lord

Won with everlasting kindness bought with sacrificial blood

Bringing reconciliation to a world that longs to know

The affections of a Father who will never let them go

Verse 3

All our sickness, all our sorrows Jesus carried up the hill

He has walked this path before us He is walking with us still

Turning tragedy to triumph Turning agony to praise

There is blessing in the battle So take heart and stand amazed

Rejoice, when you cry to Him He hears Your voice

He will wipe away your tears

Rejoice, in the midst of suffering He will help you sing

BENEDICTION

Series Information

Though we may be emerging from the pandemic, many of us are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel with feelings of fatigue and fear. This past year made clear to us all the weakness of our institutions, the frailty of our lives, and our desperate need for grace. In times like this, calls to action can fall flat because we’re simply struggling to get out of bed.
But Christ is not just the Lord of the Great Commission, but he is the gentle and lowly Shepherd. For the next four Sundays we want to take time to remember the great words of comfort that we have been given - for security, for hope, for courage - and spend time abiding in the goodness of Christ, which lasts longer than the trials at hand.
