The Annunciation

Series: The Son of God, Our Lord

The Annunciation

December 26, 2021 | Mike Stancak
Closing out our series on the Incarnation, we come to one of the pivotal scenes of the advent season: the annunciation. As Mary is told the angels message, three identities of Christ are revealed. In each, he acts as a son: Son of Mary, Son of David, and Son of God. Each of these reveals something different about who Christ is for us. May we receive him with the faith we see exemplified by Mary.

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

2 Samuel 7:18-25

CONFESSION

Almighty and most merciful Father,

we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.

We have followed too much the devices and desires

of our own hearts.

We have offended against your holy laws.

We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,

and we have done those things which we ought not

to have done;

and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.

O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Spare all those who confess their faults.

Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises

declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,

that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,

to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

CONFESSION OF FAITH (Nicene Creed)

We believe in one God,

      the Father almighty,

      maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

      the only Son of God,

begotten from the Father before all ages,

           God from God,

           Light from Light,

           true God from true God,

      begotten, not made;

of the same essence as the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

           he came down from heaven;

he became incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary,

           and was made human.

           He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate;

           he suffered and was buried.

The third day he rose again, according to the Scriptures.

           He ascended to heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again with glory

to judge the living and the dead.

           His kingdom will never end.

And we believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord, the giver of life.

He proceeds from the Father and the Son,

and with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified.

      He spoke through the prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church.

We affirm one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look forward to the resurrection of the dead,

and to life in the world to come. Amen.

Traditional Hymn

Angels we have heard on high

Gloria In excelsis Deo

Gloria In excelsis Deo

Come to Bethlehem and see

Christ whose birth the angels sing

Come adore on bended knee

Christ the Lord, the newborn King

See Him in a manger laid

Whom the choirs of angels praise

Mary, Joseph, lend you aid

While our hearts in love we raise

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

Worthy is the King who conquered the grave

Worthy is the Lamb who was slain

Worthy worthy worthy

This is amazing grace

This is unfailing love

That You would take my place

That You would bear my cross

You laid down Your life

That I would be set free

Oh Jesus I sing for all that You've done for me

SERMON

God Made Low

Sovereign Grace

Prophets promised long ago a King would come to bring us hope

And now a virgin bears a son; the time to save the world has come

Humble shepherds run in hast to see the One the angels praised

In cattle stall they find a girl who holds the hope of all the world

Emman - uel has come to us

The Christ is born halle - lujah

Our God made low to raise us up

Emman - uel has come to us

As He sleeps upon the hay He holds the moon and stars in place

Though born an infant He remain the sovereign God of endless days

For all our sins one day He'll die to make us sons of God on high

Let every heart prepare Him room the promises have all come true

Traditional Hymn

What Child is this who laid to rest

On Mary's lap is slee - ping

While shepherds watch are keeping

Why lies He in such mean estate

Where ox and lamb are feed - ing?

Good Christian, fear, for sinners here

The silent Word is pleading

This this is Christ the King

Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing

Haste haste to sing His praise

The Babe the Son of Mary

So bring Him incense gold and myrrh

Come Peasant King to own Him

The King of Kings sal - vation brings

Let loving hearts enthrone Him

Raise, raise a song on high

The virgin sings her lul - laby

Joy, joy for Christ is born

The Babe, the Son of Mary

Nails spear shall pierce Him through

The cross He'll bear for me for you

Hail hail the Word made flesh

The Babe the Son of Mary

All Glory Be To Christ

Kings Kaleidoscope

Should nothing of our efforts stand, no legacy survive

Unless the Lord does raise the house, in vain its builders strive

To you who boast tomorrow’s gain, tell me what is your life

A mist that vanishes at dawn, all glory be to Christ!

All glory be to Christ our king! All glory be to Christ!

His rule and reign we’ll ever sing, all glory be to Christ!

His will be done, His kingdom come, on earth as is above

Who is Himself our daily bread, praise Him the Lord of love

Let living water satisfy the thirsty without price

We’ll take a cup of kindness yet, all glory be to Christ!

When on the day the great I Am, the faithful and the true

The Lamb who was for sinners slain, is making all things new.

Behold our God shall live with us and be our steadfast light

And we shall ere his people be, all glory be to Christ!

All glory be to Christ our king! All glory be to Christ!

His rule and reign we’ll ever sing, all glory be to Christ

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all Creatures here below

Praise him above ye heavenly host
