A Two-Part Invention

August 08, 2021 | Mike Stancak

Passage: Genesis 2:24

**OUTSIDE SERVICE**

Over the next three weeks we will begin exploring the nature of Christian marriage.  We will wait to discuss what some call the "mystery" of marriage until later on, but this week we will look at the other purposes of marriage.  You can tell what something is by figuring out what it's for: a squash plant is made for growing squash, a knife is made for cutting and chopping.  So what is marriage ordered for?  Why does marriage take the particular shape it does?  What is it suited to do?  What we find is that marriage is ordered for union and procreation.

TCC parents should be aware that this week's sermon will involve some candid discussion of sex.  The sermon may present a helpful bridge into discussing the topic of Christian sexuality with your kids.  Most will find the content very mild, but some parents with very young but very alert children may want to use discretion.  That being said, the content will not be graphic, it will not be crude, it will not be explicit.  We just didn't want it to be a surprise!

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

Isaiah 54:1-10

RESPONSIVE READING (Based on Ephesians 5)

Leader: Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.  And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Congregation:

“Awake, O sleeper,

and arise from the dead,

and Christ will shine on you.”

Leader: Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Congregation: For Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.  He loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Traditional Hymn

Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace

Streams of mercy, never ceasing

Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet

Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise His Name; I’m fixed upon it

Name of God’s redeeming love

Hither to thy love has blessed me

Thou hast brought me to this place

And I know thy hand will bring me

Safely home by thy good grace

Jesus sought me when a stranger

Wand’ring from the fold of God

He, to rescue me from danger

Bought me with His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor

Daily I’m constrained to be

Let Thy goodness, like a fetter

Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it

Prone to leave the God I love

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

O that day when freed from sinning

I shall see thy lovely face

Full arrayed in blood-washed linen

How I'll sing thy sovereign grace

Come my Lord no longer tarry

Bring thy promises to pass

For I know thy pow'r will keep me

Till I'm home with thee at last

King of Love

I Am They

The King of Love my Shepherd is

whose goodness faileth never

I nothing lack if I am His

and He is mine forever

And He is mine forever

Where streams of living water flow

my ransomed soul He leadeth

And where the verdant pastures grow

with food celestial feedeth

Never failing Ruler of my heart

Everlasting Lover of my soul

On the mountain high or in the valley low

The King of Love my Shepherd is

The King of Love my Shepherd is

Lost and foolish off I strayed

but yet in love He sought me

And on His shoulder gently laid

and home rejoicing brought me

In death's dark veil I fear no ill

with Thee dear Lord beside me

Thy rod and staff my comfort still,

Thy cross before to guide me

Oh Hallelujah Hallelujah

Oh Hallelujah Hallelujah

And so through all the length of days

Thy goodness faileth never

Good Shepherd may I sing Your praise

Within Your house forever

Within Your house forever

SERMON

COMMUNION

Christ Will Be My Hideaway

Sovereign Grace

I will dwell within the shelter

of the God who reigns above

I will rest beneath the shadow

of the mighty King of love

Though a sickness hides in darkness

Though a plague destroys by day

I will stand upon His promises,

Christ will be my hideaway

In You, my God, I trust,

You are strong and here with us

In You my hope remains,

Christ will be my hideaway

Angels gather to protect me,

when they hear my Savior call

Sovereign hands are ever ready

to uphold me should I fall

Safe beneath his wings of refuge

All my fears are kept at bay

I am shielded by His faithfulness,

Christ will be my hideaway

Though a thousand fall around me,

though death looks me in the eye

Evil shall not have the vict'ry

while the Lord is at my side

God in power raised my Savior,

I no longer fear the grave

God in power raised my Savior,

I no longer fear the grave

Through this fragile life and evermore,

Christ will be my hideaway

COMMUNION

Your Glory/Nothing But the Blood

All Sons & Daughters w/ Traditional Hymn

My life is Yours

My hope is in You only

My heart You hold

'Cause You made this sinner holy

holy, holy

Your glory is so beautiful

I fall on to my knees in awe

And the heartbeat of my life

Is to worship in Your Light

Your glory is so beautiful

Your glory is so beautiful

Glory, glory, Hallelujah

Jesus You are good

What can wash away our sins

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can make us whole again

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

O Precious is the flow

that made us white as snow

No other fount we know

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Grace Alone

Dustin Kensrue

I was an orphan, lost at the fall;

Running away when I’d hear you call,

But Father, you worked your will.

I had no righteousness of my own,

I had no right to draw near your throne,

But Father, you loved me still.

And in love, before you laid the world’s foundation,

You predestined to adopt me as your own.

You have raised me up so high above my station;

I’m a child of God by grace, and grace alone

You left your home to seek out the lost;

You knew the great and terrible cost

But Jesus, your face was set.

I worked my fingers down to the bone;

But nothing I did could ever atone,

But Jesus, you paid my debt.

By your blood I have redemption and salvation.

Lord you died that I might reap what you have sown,

And you rose that I might be a new creation.

I am born again by grace, and grace alone.

I was in darkness all of my life,

I never knew the day from the night,

But Spirit, you made me see.

I swore I knew the way on my own;

Head full of rocks, a heart made of

stone But Spirit, you moved in me.

And At your touch my sleeping spirit was awakened;

On my darkened heart the light of Christ has shone.

Called into a kingdom that cannot shaken;

Heaven’s citizen by grace, and grace alone.

So I’ll stand in faith by grace, and grace alone

I will run the race by grace, and grace alone

I will slay my sin by grace, and grace alone

I will reach the end by grace, and grace alone

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all Creatures here below

Praise him above ye heavenly host

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost

Amen
