Fathers and Mothers
September 19, 2021 | Mike Stancak
Nobody is just a parent. They are either a mother or a father. Parenting is inevitably gendered, and both men and women bring something unique and vital with them into parenting. In our time, fathering in particular is disparaged, as though the father's role is superfluous, like an extra limb that might be nice but is unnecessary to normal functioning. The ravages of fatherless communities testify against this, and yet culturally we still seem slow to admit that mothering and fathering are both essential. As Christians, we must embrace that God made parenting, just as he made marriage, and he made it gendered. How do we embrace mothering and fathering at this moment?

CALL TO WORSHIP
Gal. 4:1-7
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Our Father who is in heaven
Hallowed be your Name
Your kingdom come, your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory
Forever and ever
Amen
CONFESSION OF FAITH (Mystery of faith)
Leader: Confess with me the mystery of our faith
Congregation:
Christ has died
Christ is risen
Christ is coming again
Come Thou Fount
Traditional Hymn
Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing
Tune my heart to sing Thy grace
Streams of mercy, never ceasing
Call for songs of loudest praise
Teach me some melodious sonnet
Sung by flaming tongues above
Praise His Name; I’m fixed upon it
Name of God’s redeeming love
Hither to thy love has blessed me
Thou hast brought me to this place
And I know thy hand will bring me
Safely home by thy good grace
Jesus sought me when a stranger
Wand’ring from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger
Bought me with His precious blood
O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let Thy goodness, like a fetter
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above
O that day when freed from sinning
I shall see thy lovely face
Full arrayed in blood-washed linen
How I'll sing thy sovereign grace
Come my Lord no longer tarry
Bring thy promises to pass
For I know thy pow'r will keep me
Till I'm home with thee at last

What A Friend/Tis So Sweet
Traditional Hymn arranged by Trinity Worship
What a friend we have in Jesus
All our sins and griefs to bear
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer
Oh what peace we often forfeit
Oh what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer
Have we trials and temptations
Is there trouble anywhere
We should never be discouraged
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Can we find a friend so faithful
Who will all our sorrows share
Jesus knows our every weakness
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Jesus Jesus How we trust You
How we’ve proved you o’er and o’er
Jesus Jesus precious Jesus
O for grace to trust You more
Are we weak and heavy laden
Cumbered with a load of care
Precious Savior, still our refuge
Take it to the Lord in prayer
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee
Take it to the Lord in prayer
In His arms He'll take and shield thee
Thou wilt find a solace there
In His arms He'll take and shield thee
Thou wilt find a solace there
COMMUNION
Crowns
by Hillsong Worship
There is a hill I cherish
Where stood a precious tree
The emblem of salvation
The gift of Calvary
How is it I should profit
While He is crucified
Yet as His life was taken
So I was granted mine
My wealth is in the cross
There's nothing more I want
Than just to know His love
My heart is set on Christ and I will count all else as loss
The greatest of my crowns means nothing to me now
For I counted up the cost
And all my wealth is in the Cross
I will not boast in riches
I have no pride in gold
But I will boast in Jesus
And in His Name alone
And when I stand in glory
My crowns before the Lord
Let this be my confession
My wealth is in the cross
From Whom All Blessings Flow (Doxology)
Hillsong Worship
What gift of love could I offer to a King
What weight or worth could be held within my offering
When He alone is worthy
A glory song is inscribed upon my heart
This treasure held in an alabaster jar I break
To bring Him all the glory
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
What sacrifice could be equal to His own
The cross of Christ has declared
that there is nought I owe
Yet I know I owe Him all
Our Father God the infinite
The matchless King mag - nificent
The living Christ the servant Son
The prophesied the saving One
The Holy Ghost gift from above
The faithful Friend the seal of love
This life, this heart this song to Him
My all in all my everything
Praise God from whom all blessings flow
Praise Him all creatures here below
Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts
Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost
Doxology
