Passage: Isaiah 42:1-17

Of the kings who ruled during Isaiah's ministry, Ahaz was the worst.  But when Ahaz was trembling at the threat of war, God sent him assurance in the form of a child who would be called Immanuel.  While this prophecy was immediately fulfilled in what was likely Isaiah's own son, it is clear by the rest of the book (and the angel Gabriel's own words at the Annunciation) that the true God-with-us would be someone else, someone whose birth would be the assurance that peace is on its way and the ruler of this age vanquished.  This figure is known to Isaiah as the Servant of the Lord.
