Series: Grace Upon Grace

Tabernacle Redux

December 13, 2020 | Mike Stancak

This week we begin our Advent series in the prologue of John.  John's prologue is extremely dense and confusing to some.  But coming out of Exodus we notice that John sees the God of Sinai visiting Bethlehem.  The Word that was heard on the mountain is swaddled in human flesh and laid in a feeding trough.  All of God's work to reveal himself and to release his kingdom culminates in a climactic act of humility and love: Christmas comes to the world.

The Shepherds’ Candle - Isaiah 35
Larry and Alice Hovde

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen

Verse 1

God rest ye merry, gentlemen, let nothing you dismay,

Remember Christ our Savior was born upon this day;

To save us all from Satan’s power when we were gone astray.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;

O tidings of comfort and joy.

Verse 2

From God our heavenly Father a blessèd angel came;

And unto certain shepherds brought tidings of the same;

How that in Bethlehem was born the Son of God by name.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;

O tidings of comfort and joy.

Verse 3

The shepherds at those tidings rejoiced much in mind

And left their flocks a-feeding in tempest, storm and wind,

And went to Bethlehem straightaway this blessèd Babe to find.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;

 O tidings of comfort and joy.

Verse 4

But when to Bethlehem they came where our dear Savior lay,

They found Him in a manger where oxen feed on hay;

His mother Mary kneeling unto the Lord did pray.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;

O tidings of comfort and joy.

Verse 5

Now to the Lord sing praises all you within this place,

And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace;

And no more walking shadow your sins have been erased,

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;

O tidings of comfort and joy.

O tidings of comfort and joy, comfort and joy;

O tidings of comfort and joy.

There shone a holy light

Verse 2

when lo! Above the earth, Rang out the angel chorus that hailed our Saviour's birth.

Verse 3

Down in a lowly manger the humble Christ was born and brought us God's salvation that blessed Christmas morn

The One who holds the stars

In the creases of His hands

Is the One who holds my heart

Like a mother once held Him

The One who knows what lies

Where space has run its course

Embraced a baby’s mind

And now I can know my God

The monarch of the stars

The King above all kings

The ruler of my heart

And the Saviour for my sins

The One who sees what lies

In each and every soul

Embraced our finite eyes

And now we can see Our God
