Series: The Great Commandment
All About Love
January 25, 2026 | Mike Stancak
Passage: 1 John 2:15-17
Both the Greatest Commandment and the other which is "like" it give the order to love. In the first, it is to love God; in the second, to love our neighbor. If law describes what it is that we each owe each other, then God's law says we each owe each other love. Of course, what it means for each of us to love God is more specific than just to have vague, warm feelings about God: love is concrete. We will worship him alone, we will not domesticate him by the worship of images, we will honor his name by declining to use it to seal an oath, etc. What we owe our neighbor is just as concrete: protect their life, their marriage, their things, etc. But in the end, the one who keeps all these laws is doing what else except loving God and people? The one who loves needs no other command.
