Passage: Daniel
This week we are introduced to the main themes of the book of Daniel. Everything that Daniel and his friends know and love is threatened by the imposing power of empire. Suddenly they must navigate a world that is not shaped by the way of the Lord, and they must do it while keeping to the way all the same. In this first chapter we encounter the themes of the whole book in miniature: the experience of exile, the authority of earthly kings, the defiance of faith, and the sovereignty of God.
Series Information

Christian political thought is a balancing act between competing allegiances. On the one hand, the state is owed our allegiance as an authority anointed by God for a certain purpose. On the other hand, our allegiance to the state is subservient to our allegiance to God. We render to Caesar what is Caesar's, but never from what we owe to God.
