Go Your Way and Be Wise

November 21, 2021 | Everett Meadors

Passage: Daniel 12:1-13

At last we come to the end; the end of Daniel and the end of time, the end of the rage of nations and the time of judgment. Here we find warnings of judgment and promises of great reward. The wise will shine like stars and the wicked will find shame and contempt. Blessing and eternal life will come for those who endure. Here we find the clearest promise of resurrection and the hope of future reward in the Hebrew scriptures. May we be wise, understand, and endure.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Colossians 1:15-20

RESPONSIVE READING (Matthew 25:31-40)

Leader:

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying,

Congregation:

‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you,

or thirsty and give you drink?

And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you,

or naked and clothe you?

And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’

Leader:

And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of

these my brothers, you did it to me.’

None above Him, None before Him

All of time in His hands

For His throne it shall remain and ever stand

All the power, All the glory

I will trust in His name

For my God is the Ancient of days

Though the dread of night, Overwhelms my soul

He is here with me, I am not a - lone

O, His love is sure, And he knows my name

For my God is the Ancient of Days

Though I may not see What the future brings

I will watch and wait For the Saviour King

Then my joy complete Standing face to face

In the presence of the Ancient of Days

COMMUNION

Nothing But the Blood

Traditional Hymn

What can wash away my sin

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can make me whole again

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

For my pardon this I see

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

For my cleansing this my plea

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

O precious is the flow

That makes me white as snow

No other fount I know

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Nothing can for sin atone

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Naught of good that I have done

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

Now by this I’ll overcome

Nothing but the blood of Jesus;

Now by this I’ll reach my home

Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

This is all my hope and peace

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

This is all my righteousness Nothing but the blood of Jesus

My wealth is in the cross

There's nothing more I want

The greatest of my crowns means nothing to me now

For I counted up the cost

And all my wealth is in the Cross

I will not boast in rich - es

I have no pride in gold

But I will boast in Jesus

My crowns before the Lord

My One Comfort

Modern Post

My one comfort both in life and death

Is that I am not my own

I was bought with blood and I confess

I belong to You alone

By the Father's good decree

Jesus You've delivered me

By Your Spirit set me free

To follow You

Jesus You have taken hold of me

And in Your grip of grace I'm finally free

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all Creatures here below

Praise him above ye heavenly host

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost

BENEDICTION

Series Information

Christian political thought is a balancing act between competing allegiances.  On the one hand, the state is owed our allegiance as an authority anointed by God for a certain purpose.  On the other hand, our allegiance to the state is subservient to our allegiance to God.  We render to Caesar what is Caesar's, but never from what we owe to God.

It is a difficult balance, even in the best of times, with nations limited by biblical principles.  But it's made even harder when the state arrays itself against God.  How does a Christian swear allegiance to God when he can't also swear allegiance to the state?  How does a Christian thrive in exile?
The book of Daniel is God's gift to his people in exile.  The tension between God and empire will be settled, and the empire of the Lord will prevail, and God's people will bear witness to its presence even now as his kingdom spreads like a stone cut from a mountain, which will become the great mountain, and fill the earth (Daniel 2:31-35).
