Up from Leviathan

July 04, 2021 | Mike Stancak

Passage: Daniel 6:1-28

Empire unchecked is Leviathan.  It is the state arrayed against God by claiming rights only God has.  What must a Christian do while living in its shadow?  Daniel 6 shows us that God is always at work, disrupting the power of empire and vindicating his people, sometimes in our lives, but always in the overthrow of God's competitors in the resurrection and return of Christ.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 22:19-31

Come Praise & Glorify

Sovereign Grace Music

Come praise and glorify our God The Father of our Lord

In Christ He has in heav'nly realms His blessings on us poured

For pure and blameless in His sight He destined us to be

And now we've been adopted through His Son eternally

To the praise of Your glory

To the praise of Your mercy and grace

To the praise of Your glory

You are the God who saves

Come praise and glorify our God Who gives His grace in Christ

In Him our sins are washed away redeemed through sacrifice

In Him God has made known to us The myst'ry of His will

That Christ should be the head of all His purpose to fulfill

Come praise and glorify our God For we've believed the Word

And through our faith we have a seal The Spirit of the Lord

The Spirit guarantees our hope Until redemption's done

Until we join in endless praise To God, the Three in One

Raised To Life

By Elevation Worship

Precious compassion that pours

From the wounds that have won our salvation

Sin was strong but the Savior is stronger

Come let us worship Him

Great was the debt that we owed

And how high was the price of our healing

Paid in full by the One who is worthy

Come let us worship Him

Raised to life with Christ the Savior

In His name a new creation

Now our song will rise adoring Christ the Lord

Death overcome by the Word

That was spoken before it was finished

Jesus Saves is our song everlasting

Come let us worship Him

Sin was strong

But Jesus is stronger

Our shame was great

But Jesus You're greater

Come Thou Fount

Traditional Hymn

Come, Thou Fount of ev’ry blessing

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace

Streams of mercy, never ceasing

Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet

Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise His Name; I’m fixed upon it

Name of God’s redeeming love

Hither to thy love has blessed me

Thou hast brought me to this place

And I know thy hand will bring me

Safely home by thy good grace

Jesus sought me when a stranger

Wand’ring from the fold of God

He, to rescue me from danger

Bought me with His precious blood

O to grace how great a debtor

Daily I’m constrained to be

Let Thy goodness, like a fetter

Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee

Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it

Prone to leave the God I love

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

Here’s my heart, O take and seal it

Seal it for Thy courts above

O that day when freed from sinning I shall see thy lovely face

Full arrayed in blood-washed linen

How I'll sing thy sovereign grace

Come my Lord no longer tarry

Bring thy promises to pass

For I know thy pow'r will keep me

Till I'm home with thee at last

SERMON

COMMUNION

O Praise the Name (Anástasis)

Traditional Hymns

I cast my mind to Calvary

Where Jesus bled and died for me

I see His wounds, His hands, His feet

My Saviour on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears

They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb

The entrance sealed by heavy stone

Messiah still and all alone

O praise the Name of the Lord our God

O praise His Name forevermore

For endless days we will sing Your praise

Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

Then on the third at break of dawn

The Son of heaven rose again

O trampled death where is your sting?

The angels roar for Christ the King

He shall return in robes of white

The blazing sun shall pierce the night

And I will rise among the saints

My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face

Christ Is Risen

By Matt Maher

Let no one caught in sin remain

Inside the lie of inward shame

We fix our eyes upon the cross

And run to Him who showed great love

And bled for us, Freely You bled, for us

Christ is risen from the dead

Trampling over death by death

Come awake, come awake

Come and rise up from the grave

Christ is risen from the dead

We are one with Him again

Come awake, come awake

Come and rise up from the grave

Beneath the weight of all our sin

You bow to none but heaven's will

No scheme of hell, no scoffer's crown

No burden great can hold You down

In strength You reign

Forever let Your church proclaim

Oh death! Where is your sting?

Oh hell! Where is your victory?

Oh Church! Come stand in the light

The glory of God has defeated the night

Oh death! Where is your sting?

Oh hell! Where is your victory?

Oh Church! Come stand in the light

Our God is not dead, He's alive, He's alive

Be Thou My Vision

Traditional Hymn with Chorus by Ascend The Hill

What can wash away our sins

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can make us whole again

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

O Precious is the flow

That makes us white as snow

No other fount I know

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

This is all our hope and peace

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

This is all our righteousness

Nothing but the Blood of Jesus

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all Creatures here below

Praise him above ye heavenly host

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost

Amen

Series Information

Christian political thought is a balancing act between competing allegiances.  On the one hand, the state is owed our allegiance as an authority anointed by God for a certain purpose.  On the other hand, our allegiance to the state is subservient to our allegiance to God.  We render to Caesar what is Caesar's, but never from what we owe to God.

It is a difficult balance, even in the best of times, with nations limited by biblical principles.  But it's made even harder when the state arrays itself against God.  How does a Christian swear allegiance to God when he can't also swear allegiance to the state?  How does a Christian thrive in exile?
The book of Daniel is God's gift to his people in exile.  The tension between God and empire will be settled, and the empire of the Lord will prevail, and God's people will bear witness to its presence even now as his kingdom spreads like a stone cut from a mountain, which will become the great mountain, and fill the earth (Daniel 2:31-35).
