Kingdom Questions: What do we do about sin? Part 1

Kingdom Questions: What do we do about sin? Part 1

May 05, 2019 | Mike Stancak

Passage: Matthew 18:1-14

This Sunday we listen as Jesus begins to talk about sin.  Sin is an unwelcome topic to most of us.  Often, we think that sin is a concept that holds us back or gives us unnecessary shame.  But Jesus gives us another way of thinking about things.  In this passage he paints a picture of a community in which people love each other enough to desire each other’s holiness.  It is a community that recognizes that sin is anything but benign, and without gracious, humble pursuit of each other, we will lose many of our number to its deceit.  Join us Sunday as we learn from the Lord how we can grow into a community that takes sin seriously.

Discussion Questions:

These questions may be best in a context where men and women are separate, to give opportunity for confession.
  1. What are your impressions from the sermon?
  2. What does it mean to humble ourselves like children?  How does this change the way we relate to each other?
  3. Who are the sorts of people we are tempted to write off?  Have we ever seen someone walk away from the faith?  Why did they?
  4. Why do we hold onto sins?  What sins are you holding onto today?
  5. Spend time pursuing each other’s holiness through prayer and encouragement as we fight sin and follow the way of Jesus.

Series Information

Matthew 12:22 - 20

In the next installment in our Matthew series as we see conflict heating up around Jesus.  As his ministry continues, it becomes clear that the values of the Kingdom clash with the arrogance, pride, and apathy of his day, and people start to polarize around him.  I'm sure the same will be true of us.  At every step we'll find that Jesus' grace is sufficient for the journey, as we learn the way of the Upside-Down Kingdom.
