What Proceeds From the Heart

What Proceeds From the Heart

Passage: Matthew 15:1-20

What does it mean to be authentic?  In our culture, authenticity has never been more valued, and has never been more rare.  To be people of integrity we must be people who are whole, the same on the inside and out, and wholly devoted to God.  This Sunday join us as we watch Jesus confront the religious authorities on their hypocrisy.  We will encounter some convicting truths about the witness of evangelicals in the 21st Century, and learn the practices necessary to be authentic Christians in a world of masks.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What does it mean to be authentic?  To be a hypocrite?
  2. Where do you see hypocrisy in modern day Christianity?  Where do you see it outside of Christianity?  Where do you see it in yourself?
  3. Think of someone who seems like an authentic Christian.  You can share their name or not, but try to identify what it is about them that makes them authentic.
  4. How can we support each other toward wholehearted discipleship this week?

Series Information

Matthew 12:22 - 20

In the next installment in our Matthew series as we see conflict heating up around Jesus.  As his ministry continues, it becomes clear that the values of the Kingdom clash with the arrogance, pride, and apathy of his day, and people start to polarize around him.  I'm sure the same will be true of us.  At every step we'll find that Jesus' grace is sufficient for the journey, as we learn the way of the Upside-Down Kingdom.
