The Fifth Word

Series: The Way

The Fifth Word

February 06, 2022 | Mike Stancak

The fifth commandment straddles the line between the first and second tablets of the law.  It instructs us in loving our first neighbors (our parents), and yet by loving parents we are trained for loving God.  When followed, the fifth commandment prepares children for wisdom, that they might live long in the land, and shelters parents in their old age.  This command reminds us that hierarchy is not against God's design; it is the basis of order.

Jesus Is Alive

CityAlight

There is now a hope that lasts beyond our days

For the one that once was buried lives again

Now the tomb is bare and empty and the stone is rolled away

Praise the Risen one who overcame the grave

All you broken hearted, all you worn and weak

Come find living water, everlasting streams

To the wandering spirit, lost and searching wanting something more

Find the risen king who overcomes the world

Let there be dancing in the darkness

And let our song break through the night

Lift your voice and sing that Christ is King

For Jesus is Alive

No more condemnation, no more doubt and fear

For our sin and shame they have no power here

In his resurrection, perfect love has set the captives free

Praise the risen king who stands in victory

Hallelujah, death is undone, Hallelujah, Jesus has won

Hallelujah, we overcome, Oh in Jesus, Oh in Jesus

Hallelujah, death is undone, Hallelujah, Jesus has won

Hallelujah, we overcome, Oh in Jesus, Oh in Jesus

Hallelujah, death is undone, Hallelujah, Jesus has won

Hallelujah, The kingdom has come, Oh in Jesus, Oh in Jesus

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 34:1-3; 8-9

CONFESSION (Psalm 51)

Leader: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out our transgressions.

Congregation: Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity, and cleanse us from our sin! For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us.

Leader: Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Hide your face from our sins, and blot out all our iniquities.

Congregation: Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us.

Leader: Cast us not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from us.

Congregation: Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and uphold us with a willing spirit.

Leader: For you will not delight in sacrifice, or we would give it;

Congregation: you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

Leader: Our sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Psalm 103:8-12)

The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. He will not always accuse, nor will he harbor his anger forever; he does not treat us as our sins deserve or repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Who You Say I Am

Hillsong Worship

Who am I that the highest King would wel - come me

I was lost but He brought me in oh His love for me

Oh His love for me

Who the Son sets free is free indeed

I'm a child of God Yes I am

Free at last He has ransomed me His grace runs deep

While I was a slave to sin Jesus died for me

Yes He died for me

Who the Son sets free is free indeed

I'm a child of God Yes I am

In my Father's house there's a place for me

I'm a child of God Yes I am

I am chosen not forsaken

I am who You say I am

You are for me not against me

I am who You say I am

How Deep The Father’s Love For Us

Stuart Townend

How deep the Father's love for us

How vast beyond all measure

That He should give His only Son

To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss

The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One

Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross

My sin upon His shoulders

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life

I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything

No gifts no pow’r no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ

His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

COMMUNION

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

Traditional Hymn

When I survey the wondrous cross

On which the Prince of glory died

My richest gain I count but loss

And pour contempt on all my pride

Forbid it Lord that I should boast

Save in the death of Christ my God

All the vain things that charm me most

I sacrifice them to His blood

Oh the wonderful cross Oh the wonderful cross

Bids me come and die And find that I may truly live

Oh the wonderful cross Oh the wonderful cross

All who gather here by Grace draw near and bless Your name

See from His head His hands His feet

Sorrow and love flow mingled down

Did ever such love and sorrow meet

Or thorns compose so rich a crown

Were the whole realm of nature mine

That were an offering far too small

Love so amazing so divine

Demands my soul my life my all

Raised To Life

Elevation Worship

Precious compassion that pours

From the wounds that have won our salvation

Sin was strong but the Savior is stronger

Come let us worship Him

Great was the debt that we owed

And how high was the price of our healing

Paid in full by the One who is worthy

Come let us worship Him

Raised to life with Christ the Savior

In His name a new creation

Now our song will rise

Adoring Christ the Lord

Death overcome by the Word

That was spoken before it was finished

Jesus saves is our song everlasting

Come let us worship Him

Sin was strong

But Jesus is stronger

Our shame was great

But Jesus You're greater

What can wash away our sins?

Nothing But the Blood of Jesus

What can make us whole again?

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

O Precious is the flow

That makes us white as snow

No other fount I know

Nothing by the blood of Jesus

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all Creatures here below

Praise him above ye heavenly host

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost

Amen
