The Second Word

Series: The Way

The Second Word

January 16, 2022 | Steve Bryan

“You shall not make for yourself a carved image..." The second word of the ten words lays the foundation for all the others, because it points us to the ideological framework within which all the other words make sense. And yet, of all the commandments, it seems the most remote from our experience  - the commandment we are least tempted to disobey. Not so for the Israelites. This was the first commandment that they disobeyed, and their disobedience left their covenant relationship with God broken and made God's presence with them impossible.  If we understand why making physical idols made so much sense to ancient peoples (and so little sense to us), we will see more clearly how keeping it takes us into the presence of a God who insist that he is present only in his Word.

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 63

God is For Us

Cityalight

We won't fear the battle, we won't fear the night

We will walk the valley with You by our side

You will go before us, You will lead the way

We have found a refuge, only You can save

Sing with joy now: our God is for us

The Father's love is a strong and mighty fortress

Raise your voice now, no love is greater

Who can stand against us if our God is for us

Even when I stumble, even when I fall

Even when I turn back, still Your love is sure

You will not abandon, You will not forsake

You will cheer me onward with never-ending grace

Neither height nor depth can separate us

Hell and death will not defeat us

He who gave His son to free us

Holds me in His love

Neither height nor depth can separate us

Hell and death will not defeat us

He who gave His son to free us

Holds me in His love

The Solid Rock

Charlie Hall

My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus' blood and righteousness

I dare not trust the sweetest frame

But wholly lean on Jesus' name

On Christ the solid rock I stand

All other ground is sinking sand

All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness seems to hide His face,

I rest on His unchanging grace

In every high and stormy gale

My anchor holds within the veil

His oath, His covenant, His blood

Support me in the whelming flood

When all around my soul gives way

He then is all my hope and stay

When He shall come with trumpet sound

Oh may I then in Him be found

Dressed in His righteousness alone

Faultless to stand before the throne

Faultless to stand before the throne

Faultless to stand before the throne

SCRIPTURE READING

SERMON

Is He Worthy

Andrew Peterson

Do you feel the world is broken? (We do)

Do you feel the shadows deepen? (We do)

But do you know that all the dark

Won't stop the light from getting through? (We do)

Do you wish that you could see it all made new? (We do)

Is all creation groaning? (It is)

Is a new creation coming? (It is)

Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst? (It is)

Is it good that we remind ourselves of this? (It is)

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

The Lion of Judah, who conquered the grave

He is David's Root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

Is he wor - thy? Is he wor - thy?

Of all blessing and honor and glo - ry?

Is he wor - thy of this? (He is)

Does the Father truly love us? (He does)

Does the Spirit move among us? (He does)

And does Jesus our Messiah hold forever those he loves? (He does)

Does our God intend to dwell again with us? (He does)

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

The Lion of Judah, who conquered the grave

He is David's Root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

From every people and tribe, every nation and tongue

He has made us a kingdom and priests to God to reign with his Son

Is He wor - thy? Is He wor - thy?

Of all blessing and honor and glo - ry?

Is He wor - thy? Is He wor - thy?

Is He worthy of this?

He is! He is! He is! He is!

He is wor - thy, He is wor - thy

Of all blessing and honor and glo - ry

He is worthy of this He is

COMMUNION

How Deep The Father’s Love

Stuart Townend

How deep the Father's love for us

How vast beyond all measure

That He should give His only Son

To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss

The Father turns His face away

As wounds which mar the Chosen One

Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross

My sin upon His shoulders

Ashamed I hear my mocking voice

Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that held Him there

Until it was accomplished

His dying breath has brought me life

I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything

No gifts no pow’r no wisdom

But I will boast in Jesus Christ

His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward

I cannot give an answer

But this I know with all my heart

His wounds have paid my ransom

Resurrecting

Elevation Worship

The head that once was crowned with thorns

Is crowned with glory now

The Savior knelt to wash our feet

Now at his feet we bow

The one who wore our sin and shame

Now robed in maje - sty

The rad - iance of perfect love

Now shines for all to see

Your name, Your name is victory

All praise will rise

To Christ our king

The fear that held us now gives way

To him who is our peace

His final breath up - on the cross

Is now a - live in me

By Your Spirit I will rise

From the ashes of de - feat

The resurrected king is resurrecting me

In Your Name I come a - live

To declare Your victo - ry

The resurrected king is resurrecting me

The tomb where soldiers watched in vain

Was borrowed for three days

His body there would not re - main

Our God has robbed the grave

Our God has robbed the grave
