The First Word

Series: The Way

The First Word

January 09, 2022 | Mike Stancak

This week we begin a series in the Ten Commandments, or as it is written in the Hebrew, the Ten Words.  All of the Law is downstream from these ten words, and all of the last nine words are downstream of this first one: you shall have no other gods before the Lord your God.  YHWH is the savior of His people, and therefore He has a claim on their loyalty.  With their new identity comes a new way of life, a way that is defined, first and foremost, by worship.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 63

Psalm 46 (Lord of Hosts)

Shane & Shane

Oh, come behold the works of God, the nations at His feet

He breaks the bow and bends the spear and tells the wars to cease

Oh, mighty One of Israel, You are on our side

We walk by faith in God who burns the chariots with fire

Lord of Hosts, You're with us with us in the fire

With us as a shelter, with us in the storm

You will lead us through the fiercest battle

Oh, where else would we go but with the Lord of Hosts

Oh, God of Jacob, fierce and great You lift Your voice to speak

The earth, it bows and all the mountains move into the sea

Oh Lord, You know the hearts of men and still you let them live

Oh God, who makes the mountains melt

Come wrestle us and win

Oh God, who makes the mountains melt

Come wrestle us and win

Though oceans roar, You are the Lord of all

The One who calms the wind and waves and makes my heart be still

Though the earth gives way, the mountains move into the sea

The nations rage, I know my God is in control

10,000 Reasons (Bless the Lord)

Matt Redman

Bless the Lord O my soul O my soul

Worship His holy name

Sing like never before O my soul

I'll worship His holy name

The sun comes up it's a new day dawning

It's time to sing Your song a - gain

What - ever may pass and what - ever lies before me

Let me be singing when the evening comes

You're rich in love and You're slow to anger

Your name is great and Your heart is kind

For all Your goodness I will keep on singing

Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find

And on that day when my strength is failing

The end draws near and my time has come

Still my soul will sing Your praise unending

Ten thousand years and then forevermore forevermore

Jesus Is Better

Austin Stone Worship

There is no other so sure and steady

My hope is held in Your hand

When castles crumble and breath is fleeting

Upon this rock I will stand

upon this rock I will stand

Glory Glory we have no other King

But Jesus Lord of All

We raise the anthem, our loudest praises ring

We crown Him Lord of All

Your kindly rule has shattered and broken

The curse of sin's tyranny

My life is hidden 'neath Heaven's shadow

Your crimson flood covers me

Your crimson flood covers me

In all my sorrows Jesus is better make my heart believe

In every victory Jesus is better make my heart believe

Than any comfort Jesus is better make my heart believe

More than all riches Jesus is better make my heart believe

Our souls declaring Jesus is better make my heart believe

And our song eternal Jesus is better make my heart believe

SERMON

Great Is Thy Faithfulness

Traditional Hymn

Great is Thy faithfulness O God my Father

There is no shadow of turning with Thee

Thou changest not, Thy com - passions, they fail not

As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be

Great is thy faithfulness

Great is thy faithfulness

Morning by morning new mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me

I could not love Thee, so blind and unfeeling

Covenant promises fell not to me

Then without warning, de - sire, or de - serving

I found my Treasure, my pleasure, in Thee

I have no merit to woo or delight Thee

I have no wisdom or pow'rs to employ

Yet in thy mercy, how pleasing thou find'st me

This is Thy pleasure that Thou art my joy

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth

Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide

Strength for to - day and bright hope for tomorrow

Blessings all mine, with ten thousand be - side

COMMUNION

Man of Sorrows

Hillsong Worship

IMan of sorrows Lamb of God

By His own betrayed

The sin of man and wrath of God

Has been on Jesus laid

Silent as He stood accused

Beaten mocked and scorned

Bowing to the Father's will

He took a crown of thorns

Oh that rugged cross My salvation

Where Your love poured out over me

Now my soul cries out Hallelujah

Praise and honour unto Thee

Sent of heaven God's own Son

To purchase and redeem

And reconcile the very ones

Who nailed Him to that tree

Now my debt is paid It is paid in full

By the precious blood That my Jesus spilled

Now the curse of sin Has no hold on me

Whom the Son sets free Oh is free indeed

See the stone is rolled away

Behold the empty tomb

Hallelujah God be praised

He's risen from the grave

Turn your eyes upon Je - sus

Look full in His wonderful face

And the things of Earth

Will grow strangely dim

In the light of His Glo - ry and Grace

O Praise the Name (Anástasis)

Hillsong Worship

I cast my mind to Calvary

Where Jesus bled and died for me

I see His wounds, His hands, His feet

My Saviour on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears

They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb

The entrance sealed by heavy stone

Messiah still and all alone

O praise the Name of the Lord our God

O praise His Name forever - more

For endless days, we will sing Your praise

Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

Then on the third, at break of dawn

The Son of heaven rose again

O trampled death, where is your sting

The angels roar for Christ the King

He shall return in robes of white

The blazing sun shall pierce the night

And I will rise among the saints

My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face

Doxology

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all Creatures here below

Praise him above ye heavenly host

Praise Father Son and Holy Ghost

Amen
