What Discipleship is Not

What Discipleship is Not

Passage: Matthew 23:23-39

From the outside, the Pharisees appeared to be entirely devoted to God.  They were pious, disciplined, moral.  And yet Jesus claims that inwardly they are far different than appearances would suggest.  Despite all their spiritual athleticism, the Pharisees had no true allegiance to God in their hearts, and so no matter how much of their spice rack they might tithe, they were still the same sorts of people who had slain the prophets and preachers of Israel’s past.  Come this Sunday as we finish Jesus’ tirade against the Pharisees, a speech that shows us what discipleship is, by showing us what discipleship is not.
