Mass Media
August 25, 2019 | Mike Stancak
Passage: John 10:10
We are continuing in our Gospel in Life series by bringing the Gospel to bear on a rising public health crisis in our culture: overuse of mass media. That may sound extremist, but the medical and psychological communities agree that if something doesn’t change, our current use of media will just go on harming us. To explore the issues as fully as we can, we’ve invited our resident commuications expert, Kristin Gumminger, to do an interview for us, where we will see how the Church has a unique opportunity to stand for what it really means to share community in the age of social media.
Discussion Questions:
- What stuck out to you from the interview? What were left thinking about and feeling?
- What kind of use do you make of mass media? What do you sense needs to change for your health?
- Kristin mentioned that the biggest problem with the way Americans use mass media comes to down to how much time Americans give mass media. What do you think makes us want to spend as much time as we do in front of screens? What are they doing for us?
- What makes being face-to-face with people difficult? What makes solitude difficult?
- How does the Gospel motivate to use our time in ways that are more healthy and human?
Series Information

So often we spend our lives believing the content of the Gospel, but how does it really change the way we work, the way we consume media, the way we prioritize our weekly activities, the way we engage with friendships, or even the way we prepare to age and die? We believe that the Gospel absolutely speaks to all those things. We will be taking topics one by one and demonstrating the real, down-to-earth, practical ways the Gospel shapes our lives.
