Passage: 1 Timothy 6:6-19
American finances are in a strange spot. From a global perspective, many Americans live lives of apparent wealth. Americans still have more comfort and security and luxury at their finger tips than most people in the world will ever experience. But the truth is that many Americans are living under more financial insecurity than they have for a generation, and discontentment and depression is at an all time high. How might the Gospel help to shape us in the middle of this confusing time? Join us this Sunday to see how the Gospel moves us away from finding our security, identity and joy in our resources, and toward a kind of freedom that overflows in radical generosity.
Discussion Questions:
- What are your impressions from the sermon?
- What is your biggest fear when it comes to finances? What desires drive you most when it comes to your standard of living and finances?
- How does the Gospel give us a new kind of contentment? What might change in how you lived if you allowed God to bring you to that place of contentment?
- Do you relate to the writer who described a sense of shame as a result of his financial situation? How does the Gospel free us from shame? How can we create a space where we feel safe with each other to express our financial needs?
- How does the Gospel change our financial goals?
