A Priest Forever

February 14, 2021 | Mike Stancak

Passage: Hebrews 6:20-7:28

We come to a highly dense passage of Scripture, a passage the author of Hebrews thinks may be too weighty to be appreciated by the immature.  It is a comparison between the priesthood of the Levites and the priesthood of Jesus.  Few of us know what it is to have a priest, at least as they existed in the Old Covenant, but we do know what it is to be represented.  We know what it is to need someone who can stand in for us at the highest positions of power, and we know what it is for our representatives to leave something wanting.  They often fail us, sometimes because they are limited by what the system allows them to do on our behalf, other times because they are dishonest or weak.
But what if a new kind of representative emerged, and with him a whole new system?  That is what we have in Jesus: a priest forever, not after the order of the old priests and the old system, but after the order of Melchizedek.

Psalm 110:1-4

CONFESSION

(From the Book of Common Prayer 2019)

Almighty and most merciful Father,

we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.

We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.

We have offended against your holy laws.

We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,

and we have done those things which we ought not to have done;

and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.

O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Spare all those who confess their faults.

Restore all those who are penitent,

according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,

that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,

to the glory of your holy Name.

Amen.
