The Discipline of the Lord

April 11, 2021 | Mike Stancak

Passage: Hebrews 12:3-17

One author once said the Christian life is not opposed to effort, but to earning. The struggle against sin is often taxing, just as the struggle against cultural pressure is exhausting. The Christian can either see the struggle as a sign of God’s s disapproval, or as a sign of his fatherly love. The author of Hebrews reminds us that good fathers discipline their children and that we must not grow weary of the instruction that comes through struggle, because it is the same struggle that was endured by Christ himself on our behalf.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Proverbs 3:5-8, 11-12

CONFESSION (adapted from Psalm 51)

Leader: Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out our transgressions.

Congregation: Wash us thoroughly from our iniquity, and cleanse us from our sin! For we know our transgressions, and our sin is ever before us.

Leader: Against you, you only, have we sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.

Congregation: Hide your face from our sins, and blot out all our iniquities.

Leader: Create in us a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within us.

Congregation: Cast us not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from us.

Leader: Restore to us the joy of your salvation, and uphold us with a willing spirit.

Congregation: For you will not delight in sacrifice, or we would give it;

Leader: you will not be pleased with a burnt offering.

Congregation: Our sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;

Leader: a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

CONFESSION OF FAITH

Leader: Declare with me the mystery of our faith

Congregation:

Christ has died

Christ is risen

Christ is coming again

Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery

by Matt Papa

Verse 1 (Birth)

Come behold the wondrous mystery,

In the dawning of the King

He the theme of heaven's praises

robed in frail humanity

In our longing in our darkness

now the light of life has come

Look to Christ who condescended

took on flesh to ransom us

Verse 2 (Life)

Come behold the wondrous mystery,

He the perfect Son of Man

In His living in His suffering,

not a trace or stain of sin

See the true and better Adam,

come to save the hell-bound man

Christ the great and sure fulfillment

of the law in Him we stand

Verse 3 (Death)

Come behold the wondrous mystery

Christ the Lord upon the tree

In the stead of ruined sinners

hangs the Lamb in victory

See the price of our redemption

see the Father's plan unfold

Bringing many sons to glory,

grace unmeasured, love untold

Verse 4 (Resurrection)

Come behold the wondrous mystery

slain by death the God of life

But no grave could e'er restrain

Him praise the Lord He is alive

What a foretaste of deliverance

how unwavering our hope

Christ in power resurrected,

as we will be when He comes

Chorus (Return)

Lift your eyes, Lift up your voices,

Celebrate the coming King

He will split the skies in power,

Yes, He reigns, victoriously

Grace Greater

Traditional Hymn / New Melody By The Village Church

Verse 1

Marvelous grace of our loving Lord

Grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt

Yonder on Calvary’s mount outpoured

There where the blood of the Lamb was spilled

Sin and despair like the sea waves cold

Threaten the soul with infinite loss

Grace that is greater, yes, grace untold

Points to the refuge, the mighty cross

Chorus

Grace Grace that will pardon and cleanse within

Grace Grace that is greater than all our sin

Verse 3

Dark is the stain that we cannot hide

What can avail to wash it away

Look there is flowing a crimson tide

Brighter than snow you may be today

Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace

Freely bestowed on all who believe

You that are longing to see His face

Will you this moment His grace receive?

Bridge

This is why we have life, this is how we’re saved

By the precious blood of Jesus Christ, that He chose to give away

Chorus 2

Grace, God’s grace,

grace that will pardon and cleanse within

Grace, God’s grace,

grace that is greater than all our sin

SERMON

Rejoice

By The Modern Post

VERSE 1

Come and stand before your Maker

Full of wonder, full of fear

Come behold His power and glory

Yet with confidence draw near

For the one who holds the heavens

And commands the stars above

Is the God who bends to bless us

With an unrelenting love

CHORUS 1

Rejoice, come and lift your hands and Raise your voice,

He is worthy of our praise Rejoice,

sing the mercies of your King

and with trembling, rejoice

VERSE 2

We are children of the promise

The beloved of the Lord

Won with everlasting kindness

Bought with sacrificial blood Bringing reconciliation

To a world that longs to know

The affections of a Father Who will never let them go

Verse 3

All our sickness, all our sorrows Jesus carried up the hill

He has walked this path before us He is walking with us still

Turning tragedy to triumph Turning agony to praise

There is blessing in the battle So take heart and stand amazed

Rejoice, when you cry to Him He hears Your voice,

He will wipe away your tears

Rejoice, in the midst of suffering

He will help you sing

COMMUNION

Lord Have Mercy/Nothing But the Blood

Sovereign Grace

VERSE 1

O God, we come before Your throne and in our weakness we confess

We go astray and sin each day

we cast ourselves upon Your grace

CHORUS 1

O Lord, have mercy on us

Sinners in need of grace

Forgive us our transgressions

And lead us in Your righteous ways

God, lead us in Your righteous ways

VERSE 2

The blood You shed has paid our debts

Jesus, You’ve washed our sins away

We trust Your grace, believe by faith

In You we have all righteousness

CHORUS 2

O Lord, you've shown us mercy

Sinners are washed as saints

You've shown Your loving kindness

Sons of disgrace are righteous made

Sons of disgrace are righteous made

VERSE 3

We fix our eyes on You, our prize

Jesus, the Author of our faith

Till You return or bring us home

You strengthen us to run the race

CHORUS 3

O Lord, forever faithful

All glory to Your Name!

We have no other Savior

Our great Redeemer, God and King

Jesus, Redeemer, God and King

ENDING

What can wash away our sins

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

What can make us whole again

Nothing but the blood of Jesus

O precious is the flow that makes us white as snow

No other fount I know, nothing but the blood of Jesus

All I Have Is Christ

By Sovereign Grace

Verse 1

I once was lost in darkest night

yet thought I knew the way

The sin that promised joy and life

had led me to the grave

I had no hope that You would own

a rebel to Your will

And if You had not loved me first

I would refuse You still

Verse 2

But as I ran my hell-bound race

indifferent to the cost

You looked upon my helpless state

and led me to the cross

And I beheld God's love displayed

You suffered in my place

You bore the wrath reserved for me

now all I know is grace

Chorus

Hallelujah all I have is Christ

Hallelujah Jesus is my life

Hallelujah all I have is Christ

Hallelujah Jesus is my life

Verse 3

Now Lord I would be Yours alone

and live so all might see

The strength to follow Your commands

could never come from me

O Father use my ransomed life in any way You choose

O Father use my ransomed life in any way You choose

And let my song forever be my only boast is You

Ending

Turn Your eyes upon Jesus

Look full on His wonderful face

And all the things of earth grow strangely dim

In the light of his glorious grace
