Series: Lasting Things: A Series in Hebrews
Hold Onto Jesus, Our Great High Priest
January 31, 2021 | John Stevenson
Passage: Hebrews 4:14-5:10
Why talk about Jesus being our high priest? All that priesthood stuff in the Old Testament—sacrificing animals and whatever they did—has been over for thousands of years. Wouldn’t it be better to talk about something to help with life right now?
Hmm . . . let me ask you a few questions:
- Do you ever sin and later feel guilty and wonder if God will forgive you? Or if there’s a way to win the next time you’re tempted?
- Do you ever find another religion, a spirituality, or a secular way of life more attractive than following Jesus?
- Do you ever wish there was someone who understood your struggles with obedience and suffering and unanswered prayer?
If you answered yes to one of these questions, Jesus being our high priest may be more relevant to your life than it sounds. Join us Sunday in person or on line and check it out.

CALL TO WORSHIP
I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go to the house of the Lord.” (Psalm 122:1)
Leader: Trinity Community Church, lift up your hearts this morning.
Congregation: Our hearts are lifted up to the Lord.
CONFESSION
From the Book of Common Prayer 2019
Almighty and most merciful Father,
we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.
We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.
We have offended against your holy laws.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,
and we have done those things which we ought not to have done;
and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.
O Lord, have mercy upon us.
Spare all those who confess their faults.
Restore all those who are penitent,
according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.
And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,
that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,
to the glory of your holy Name.
Amen.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
(Based on Hebrews 4:14-16)
APOSTLE’S CREED
Leader: Confess with me our faith through the Apostle’s Creed
Congregation:
I believe in God the Father Almighty
Maker of heaven and earth
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
Born of the virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate
Was crucified, died, and was buried
He descended to the dead
On the third day he rose again
He ascended into heaven
And is seated at the right hand of the Father
I believe in the Holy Spirit
The holy catholic church
The communion of saints
The forgiveness of sins
The resurrection of the body
And the life everlasting
Amen.

Verse 1
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly trust in Jesus' Name
Chorus
Christ alone cornerstone
Weak made strong in the Saviour's love
Through the storm He is Lord
Lord of all
Verse 2
When darkness seems to hide His face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
My anchor holds within the veil
Verse 3
When He shall come with trumpet sound
O may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

Is a new creation coming? (It is)

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?
