The God Who is One

Series: Exodus: The God Who Is

The God Who is One

October 18, 2020 | Mike Stancak

Passage: Exodus 20:1-17

When asked to summarize God's will for people, Jesus responds with what has sometimes been called the two tablets of the law: love God and love people.  A life marked by these two features will be a life marked by God's rule.  This week Israel is introduced to the tablets of the Ten Commandments, considered one of the most monumental moral documents of human history.  Jesus pointed out that embedded in these commands is a glimpse of heaven itself, if we're willing to see it and obey in faith.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 119:129-136

Leader: Lift up your hearts

Congregation: Our hearts are lifted up to the Lord

CONFESSION

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name.

Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS IN CHRIST

Romans 3:20-24

CONFESSION OF FAITH (Apostle’s Creed)

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.

He was conceived by the Holy Spirit

and born of the Virgin Mary.

He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

He ascended into heaven,

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic Church,

the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body,

and the life everlasting.

Amen

LORD’S SUPPER

Oh Love That Will Not Let me Go Traditional Hymn

Verse 1

Oh love that will not let me go

I rest my weary soul in Thee

I give You back this life I owe

And in Your ocean depths its flow

May richer fuller be

Chorus 1

My life is not my own It's yours

My life is not my own I know it's yours

Verse 2

Oh light that follows all my ways

I yield my flickering torch to Thee

And my heart restores it's borrowed ray And in Your sunshine's blaze its day

May brighter fairer be

Chorus 2

So light a fire in my heart And I'll burn for you

So light a fire in my heart And I'll burn for you

Verse 3

Oh joy that seeks me through the pain

I cannot close my heart to Thee

I chase the rainbow through the rain

And feel the promise is not vain

That more shall tearless be

Chorus 3

So anoint me with joy And joyful I will be So anoint me with joy And joyful I will be

Verse 4

Oh cross that's lifting up my head

I dare not ask to fly from Thee

I lay in dust life's glory dead

And from the ground their blossoms red Life that shall endless be

Chorus 4

We will sing Holy Holy is the King of Kings

And we will sing Holy Holy is the King of Kings

In Christ Alone
Keith & Kristyn Getty

Verse 1

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song;

This Cornerstone, this solid Ground,

Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled,

when strivings cease!

My Comforter, my All in All,

Here in the love of Christ I stand.

Verse 2

In Christ alone! Who took on flesh

Fullness of God in helpless babe!

This gift of love and righteousness

Scorned by the ones he came to save:

Till on that cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied

For every sin on Him was laid;

Here in the death of Christ I live.

Verse 3

There in the ground His body lay

Light of the world by darkness slain:

Then bursting forth in glorious Day

Up from the grave he rose again!

And as He stands in victory

Sin's curse has lost its grip on me,

For I am His and He is mine

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

Verse 4

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the power of Christ in me;

From life's first cry to final breath.

Jesus commands my destiny.

No power of hell, no scheme of man,

Can ever pluck me from His hand;

Till He returns or calls me home,

Here in the power of Christ I'll stand.

God Is For Us
CityAlight

Verse 1

We won't fear the battle, we won't fear the night

We will walk the valley with You by our side

You will go before us, You will lead the way

We have found a refuge, only You can save

Chorus

Sing with joy now: our God is for us

The Father's love is a strong and mighty fortress

Raise your voice now, no love is greater

Who can stand against us if our God is for us

Verse 2

Even when I stumble, even when I fall

Even when I turn back, still Your love is sure

You will not abandon, You will not forsake

You will cheer me onward with never-ending grace

Bridge

Neither height nor depth can separate us

Hell and death will not defeat us

He who gave His son to free us

Holds me in His love

DOXOLOGY

Praise God from whom all blessings flow

Praise Him all creatures here below

Praise him above ye heavenly hosts

Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
