The God Who Sees

Series: Exodus: The God Who Is

The God Who Sees

August 16, 2020 | Mike Stancak

Passage: Exodus 2:1-10

At the end of last week's sermon, Pharaoh orders his people to take the newborn sons of the Israelites and to throw them into the Nile.  It is a heinous act of violence, carried out by a people driven by paranoia.  It is an act that is terrible in its own right, and yet dwarfed by so many of the atrocities committed over the years by so many other cultural and political powers.  What will God do?

We are told that he sees.  His attention is on the oppressed, and his answer is to raise up a deliverer.  This Sunday we hear about the deliverer, Moses, through whom God leads his people to freedom.  But Moses would go on to say that Israel could expect a prophet like him, and greater.  And this deliverer would go on to not only answer oppression, but the corrupt heart by which oppression comes.

CALL TO WORSHIP

Psalm 18:1-2

Leader: Lift up your hearts

Congregation: Our hearts are lifted up to the Lord

CONFESSION

Most merciful God,

we confess that we have sinned against you

in thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done,

and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart;

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,

have mercy on us and forgive us;

that we may delight in your will,

and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your Name. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS IN CHRIST

Oh how grace abounds

We will praise the lord, our rescuer

Good news for the shamed

There is good news for the one who walked away

He is beauty for the blind man

Riches for the poor

He is friendship for the one the world ignores

SERMON

LORD’S SUPPER

Is He Worthy?
by Andrew Peterson

Verse 1

Do you feel the world is broken? (We do)

Do you feel the shadows deepen? (We do)

But do you know that all the dark won't stop the light from getting through? (We do)

Do you wish that you could see it all made new? (We do)

Verse 2

Is all creation groaning? (It is)

Is a new creation coming? (It is)

Is the glory of the Lord to be the light within our midst? (It is)

Is it good that we remind ourselves of this? (It is)

Pre-Chorus

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave

He is David's root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

Chorus 1

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?

Of all blessing and honor and glory

Is He worthy of this?

He is

[Verse 3]

Does the Father truly love us? (He does)

Does the Spirit move among us? (He does)

And does Jesus, our Messiah hold forever those He loves? (He does)

Does our God intend to dwell again with us? (He does)

Pre-Chorus 2

Is anyone worthy? Is anyone whole?

Is anyone able to break the seal and open the scroll?

The Lion of Judah who conquered the grave

He is David's root and the Lamb who died to ransom the slave

From every people and tribe every nation and tongue

He has made us a kingdom and priests to God

To reign with the Son

[Refrain 2]

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?

Of all blessing and honor and glory

Is He worthy? Is He worthy?

Is He worthy of this?

Ending

He is! He is! He is! He is!

He is worthy, he is worthy

Of all blessing and honor and glory

He is worthy of this

He is
