The God Whose People We Love

Series: Exodus: The God Who Is

The God Whose People We Love

November 01, 2020 | Mike Stancak

We continue looking into what's called the Book of the Covenant, the expectations for life under God's rule.  And we see that a life lived in response to God will be marked by love for people.  In the Heavenly City, humans are valued more than any earthly thing, land and things and property are considered gifts to be stewarded and protected, and people take up responsibility to each other while caring for those who cannot take the same kind of responsibility for themselves.  It is a community of love and dignity, justice and compassion.

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

Deuteronomy 6:4-5, Leviticus 19:18

Leader: Lift up your hearts

Congregation: Our hearts are lifted up to the Lord

CONFESSION

Almighty and most merciful Father,

we have erred and strayed from your ways like lost sheep.

We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts.

We have offended against your holy laws.

We have left undone those things which we ought to have done,

and we have done those things which we ought not to have done;

and apart from your grace, there is no health in us.

O Lord, have mercy upon us.

Spare all those who confess their faults.

Restore all those who are penitent, according to your promises declared to all people in Christ Jesus our Lord.

And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake,

that we may now live a godly, righteous, and sober life,

to the glory of your holy Name. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS IN CHRIST

Hebrews 12:1-2

CONFESSION OF FAITH (APOSTLE’S CREED)

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

      creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit

And born of the virgin Mary.

   He suffered under Pontius Pilate,

   was crucified, died, and was buried;

   he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again.

   He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He is coming again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

   the holy catholic* church,

   the communion of saints,

   the forgiveness of sins,

   the resurrection of the body,

   and the life everlasting. Amen.

Glorious Day
Passion

Verse 1

I was buried beneath my shame

Who could carry that kind of weight

It was my tomb 'til I met You

I was breathing but not alive

All my failures I tried to hide

It was my tomb 'til I met You

Chorus 1

You called my name and I ran out of that grave

Out of the darkness into Your glorious day

You called my name and I ran out of that grave

Out of the darkness into Your glorious day

Verse 3

Now Your mercy has saved my soul

Now Your freedom is all that I know

The old made new Jesus when I met You

Bridge

I needed rescue my sin was heavy

But chains break at the weight of Your glory

I needed shelter I was an orphan

Now You call me a citizen of Heaven

When I was broken You were my healing

Now Your love is the air that I'm breathing

I have a future my eyes are open

Christ Be All Around Me
All Sons & Daughters

Verse 1

As I rise, strength of God Go before, lift me up

As I wake, eyes of God Look upon, be my sight

As I wait, heart of God Satisfy and sustain

As I hear, voice of God Lead me on, be my guide Be my guide

Chorus

Above and below me Before and behind me

In every eye that sees me Christ be all around me (x2)

SERMON

LORD’S SUPPER

The Sower’s Song by Andrew Peterson

Verse 1

O God, I am furrowed like the field, torn open like the dirt

And I know that to be healed that I must be broken first

I am aching for the yield that You will harvest from this hurt

Chorus 1

Abide in me, let these branches bear You fruit

Abide in me, Lord, as I abide in You

Verse 2

So I kneel at the bright edge of the garden, at the golden edge of dawn

At the glowing edge of spring when the winter's edge is gone

And I can see the color green, I can hear the Sower's song

Chorus 2

Abide in me, let these branches bear You fruit

Abide in me, Lord, let Your Word take root

Remove in me the branch that bears no fruit

Move in me, Lord, as I abide in You

Bridge

As the rain and the snow fall down from the sky

And they don't return, but they water the earth

And they bring forth life Giving seed to the sower and bread for the hunger

So shall the Word of the Lord be with a sound like thunder

And it will not return it will not return void

We shall be led in peace, and go out with joy

And the hills before us will raise their voices

And the trees of the field will clap their hands as the land rejoices

And instead of the thorn now the cypress towers

And instead of the brier the myrtle blooms with a thousand flowers

And it will make a Name make a Name for our God

A sign everlasting, that will never be cut off

As the earth brings forth sprouts from the seed

What is sown in the garden grows into a mighty tree

So the Lord plants justice justice and praise

To rise before the nations until the end of days

As the rain and the snow fall down from the sky

And they don't return, but they water the earth

And they bring forth life giving seed to the sower and bread for the hunger

So shall the Word of the Lord be with a sound like thunder

And it will not return it will not return void

And it will not return it will not return void

And it will not return it will not return void

We shall be led in peace, and go out with joy

Ending

And the Sower leads us, and the Sower leads us

And the Sower leads us

Living Hope
Phil Wickham

Verse 1

How great the chasm that lay between us

How high the mountain I could not climb

In desperation I turned to heaven

And spoke Your name into the night

Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness

Tore through the shadows of my soul

The work is finished the end is written

Jesus Christ my living hope

Verse 2

Who could imagine so great a mercy

What heart could fathom such boundless grace

The God of ages stepped down from glory

To wear my sin and bear my shame

The cross has spoken I am forgiven

The King of kings calls me His own

Beautiful Savior I’m Yours forever

Jesus Christ my living hope

Chorus

Hallelujah praise the One who set me free

Hallelujah death has lost its grip on me

You have broken every chain

There’s salvation in Your name

Jesus Christ my living hope

Verse 3

Then came the morning that sealed the promise

Your buried body began to breathe

Out of the silence the Roaring Lion

Declared the grave has no claim on me

Jesus Yours is the victory

Because He Lives
Covered by David Crowder Band

Verse 1

God sent His Son they called Him Jesus

He came to love, heal and forgive

He lived and died to buy my pardon

An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives

Chorus

Because He lives I can face tomorrow

Because He lives all fear is gone

Because I know He holds the future

And life is worth the living just because He lives

Verse 2

And then one day I'll cross that river

I'll fight life's final war with pain

And then as death gives way to vict'ry

I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know he lives

DOXOLOGY
